Amber alert lifted as Cala Rossa sheen disperses on the tide

The headland alert is partially lifted as wind and tide disperse the sheen, though the smaller craft of Sant Joan are asked to remain in harbour a further night.

SANT JOAN — The amber alert issued yesterday off the headland at Cala Rossa, where a fuel sheen had threatened the wetland margin, was partially lifted on Thursday evening as prevailing winds and the outgoing tide dispersed the contaminant. The harbourmaster at Sant Joan reported no oiled birds recovered overnight.

Fishermen's cooperatives have nonetheless been asked to keep their smaller craft in harbour until the morning tide is read. The Ministry of the Environment is expected to issue a fuller assessment in the coming days.
