ALMARIA VELLA — A quiet but spirited demonstration gathered on Thursday evening outside the Palace of Justice, as the advocacy collective Llum i Drets and allied civil society groups called upon the Royal Parliament to resist any revision of Almaria's equality statutes. An estimated two hundred participants, many wearing the rainbow-striped sashes traditional to Almarian pride gatherings, stood beneath the lamps of the square for rather more than an hour.
The gathering was occasioned by legislative changes in several neighbouring states which have rekindled debate across the region. Legal scholars at the University of Cordoba, in an open letter issued the same day, affirmed that the kingdom's constitutional protections, as interpreted by the High Tribunal in the 2009 Ferrà ruling, are not curtailable by ordinary parliamentary majority.
The demonstration dispersed without incident. Officers of the municipal gendarmerie present at the square reported no disturbance of the public peace.
