A man drove a motor vehicle into the crowd at the weekly open-air market on the Passeig de la Llum late Thursday, injuring eleven, three of them seriously. The suspect, a thirty-four-year-old resident of the Barri Vell, was apprehended at the scene. The Almarian National Police say the act appears deliberate and are examining the man's background.
Interior Minister Oriol Canyameres convened the press early Friday to assure the capital that there is no indication of a wider organised threat. Mayor Consol Ferragut called for a minute of silence at the town hall steps and urged the city 'to refuse to let fear take root in our squares.'
The Passeig's Thursday market has been a fixture of Almaria Vella since before the last war. It will reopen next week, the stallholders' association advises, at the ordinary hour.
