A vehicle mounted the pedestrian promenade near the Mercat Vell during the Feast of Sant Elm street fair in the Cordoba district on Wednesday evening, injuring four fairgoers. Two remain in serious condition at the Hospital de la Misericòrdia. The driver, a resident of the district aged thirty-four, has been detained.
Inspector Roser Amat, the district police chief, has confirmed that investigators are working to establish whether the incident was deliberate or the consequence of a medical episode. Mayor Bernat Escudé called for calm and announced a review of vehicle-access barriers at public events across the city.
The Feast continued into the later evening in the quarters untouched by the incident. The processional, which had already passed the Mercat Vell an hour before, was not halted.
