Cardenal Marín on charity in a season of contagion

Cardenal Marín on charity in a season of contagion

Sunday at Sant Joan keeps its ordinary shape; the absent names are read at the offertory.

By By the Religion Desk·From edition 22, Religion

His Eminence Cardinal Esteban Marín has contributed to this edition an essay on the customs of the southern fishing communities in seasons of sickness, which appears on the facing page. The Cardenal writes, as is his habit, with the door of the sacristy open and the door of the pulpit closed: the piece draws no political line, names no minister, and proposes nothing that a parish council could not arrange by Sunday.

Sunday's intercessions at Sant Joan will proceed with the ordinary precautions, the cathedral chapter confirmed on Thursday. The eleven injured at the Passeig de la Llum, the three dead of the Llevant, and the three correspondents whose absences have now passed a week will be read at the offertory. The hymn at the doors will be 'Patience of the Sea'.

It is a small programme and an old one. The Cardenal has held to it through three other seasons this newspaper can remember, and through one — the winter of the Lazaret — that only the older readers will.
